Everything I learned about cooking (and eating) can be traced back to the Sicilian women in my family. As a first generation American, I grew up on familiar and traditional sicilian recipes like arancine, caponata, marinara, chicken piccata and cannoli. I learned two very important things very quickly: all recipes start with olive oil, onion and garlic, and when nonna asks if you want seconds, the answer is always yes.
It is with this foundation, that I have learned to absolutely love food. Whether trying out a new restaurant or recipe, I am obsessed with tasting, pairing, sautéing and sharing. I fundamentally believe that food has a greater purpose than nourishment (which is incredibly important no doubt!). Food has the power to unite communities, family, friends and foe, and strangers over a shared experience.
My good friend Katherine sent me this bumper sticker she stumbled across in Adams Morgan. Love People: Cook them tasty food. That's my mantra and I hope I inspire you to embrace it as well - you'd make my nonna very proud (well, that is, if she knew what a blog was!).
